T-Mobile APN Settings

If you’re ever experiencing issues with the reception involving your T-Mobile data APN, fixing it will require you to work with your APN settings. Whether you’re dealing with T-Mobile APN settings for Android or T-Mobile APN settings for iPhone, it’s a process that will only take you a few minutes to do and will allow your phone to work better. The only thing to note is that the setup is different depending on the type of phone that you have.

When you sign up with a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, you might also need to configure your APN settings for your phone. An MVNO works by leasing broadcast spectrum from big carriers.

Access Point Name, more commonly known as the simple acronym APN, is a kind of password for your phone to access the internet.

When you set up a T-Mobile Access Point Name into your mobile phone, your carrier will take a look at your information and make a decision on the kind of connection that should be made. This includes what IP address should be assigned to your phone, if the phone should be connected through a private customer network, and what security method is best used with your phone.

APNs have several different settings that can be applied to them. The settings are basically text fields that can be filled in so that you can connect to T-Mobile cellular data settings. They were created for carriers to receive and broadcast radio frequencies regulated by the government. Every phone has to be specially set up to use these settings or they’ll experience data connection problems, such as the use of mobile data and the ability to send MMS.

The four APN settings that are most important are proxy, MMSC, APN type, and APN. MMSC is used for sending multimedia messaging services. If you don’t use MMS then it isn’t a setting you need. APN types include WAP, MMS, SUPL, and generic. The types vary depending on the carrier you have.

Why Do You Need APNs Setup?

You want to have the correct T-Mobile APN setup so that you have the correct setting for your mobile internet server. In this case, you’re trying to route to the T-Mobile APN setting server. There will be a list of values that you’ll deal with including server, username, name, APN, password, etc. They only work for specific carriers in certain countries, meaning that T-Mobile APN settings will only work in the United States.

Can I Setup T-Mobile’s APN Settings And Unlock My Phone?

The first thing you need to start the setup is a T-Mobile SIM card. Besides having a SIM card, the only other thing you need is a phone compatible with the T-Mobile network that is also unlocked.

To set up your data and APN settings go to the home screen of your phone and tap the “Apps” icon. Find the “settings” then scroll to “Network Connections.” Once on the connections page, go to “more networks.” You’ll then go to “mobile networks” and then “Access Point Names.”

You’ll want to reset your APN by tapping the “menu” icon and then the “reset to default” button. If it’s available, tap on the “T-Mobile US LTE APN” which will fill in the bullet point with green. To verify the APN, tap the same bullet point.

The next thing you want to do is verify and update some of the settings for your Data APN. These include making sure it uses the following T Mobile Access Point Names:

  • Name: T-Mobile US LTE
  • Proxy: Leave blank
  • APN: fast.t-mobile.com
  • Port: Leave blank
  • Username: Leave blank
  • Password: Leave blank
  • Server: Leave blank
  • MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
  • Multimedia message proxy: Leave blank
  • Multimedia message port: Leave blank
  • MNC: 260
  • MCC: 310
  • Authentication type: None
  • APN Type: default, SUPL, Internet+MMS OR MMS
  • Default Android will provide a text field to enter either default, SUPL, MMS
  • Samsung will provide an Internet+MMS radio button to select.
  • APN roaming protocol: IPv4
  • APN protocol: IPv6
  • Turn APN on/off: APN turned on
  • Bearer: Unspecified
  • Mobile virtual network operator type: None
  • Mobile virtual network operator value: Leave blank

You’ll then want to go to the “menu” key that is located on the top right. Tap “save.” You’ll then choose your APN profile that you desire to use. Once you do, the bullet point will turn green next to that profile.

There are a few other things that you can do with your T-Mobile 4G LTE APN settings to get what you want from your phone.

Manual Network Selection

Your device should detect and then register on wireless networks that are inside the calling area for T-Mobile. Roaming networks are typically restricted to SIM cards for T-Mobile. When you manually select a network it can only be done in areas where the GSM spectrum isn’t owned by T-Mobile.

To manually select a network go to your home screen and tap on “apps.” Find your “settings” and scroll to “Network Connections” as you did before. Then go to “mobile networks” and then tap on “network operators.” Finally, go to “search now.”

Switch 2G / 4G

To switch your T-Mobile LTE APN settings between 2G to 4G and back, do the same steps as before up until you get to “mobile networks.” From there go into “network mode” and tap the band settings that you want. The possible band settings include “GSM (auto connect) LTE setting/ WCDMA/LTE, WCDMA (auto connect)/GSM, WCDMA only, and GSM only 2G setting.

Turn On/Off Airplane Mode

Airplane mode is used to turn off your wireless connections. You can still use offline apps, but you can’t use the internet or voice commands. While many new smartphones, especially androids, have a button located on a drop-down screen for turning on and off airplane mode.

From your home screen, go to “apps” and then to “settings.” After that, go to “Network Connection” and tap “airplane mode.” You should be able to slide the setting from the “on” position to “off” and back again whenever you need it.

Turn On/Off Data Roaming

Starting from the home screen, follow the same steps you would to manually select a network up to “mobile networks.” Check the box next to “data roaming” to enable the function and clear the checkbox when you want to disable it.

Turn On/Off Mobile Data

Much like these other processes, you start at your home screen and then go until you’re at your “mobile networks.” There you’ll find a checkbox that will enable you to turn on your mobile data connection.

When doing your APN settings, you want to make sure that if you see something capitalized it remains capitalized. If there are no spaces or if there are commas, ensure that they’re still there. If you don’t do these things then you’ll experience problems with your APN settings. It’ll cause functions to not work like MMS picture messages and your internet.

Before you try and fix these settings, make sure that you have deleted the other APN settings on your phone that do not work. The best way to do this is by rebooting your phone.
