How to Change Verizon Wireless APN Settings
Have you recently bought an unlocked phone? More and more people are choosing to purchase unlocked iPhones and set up their phones with carriers of their own choosing. But what does “unlocked” really mean? It just means your phone is not tied down to any single phone provider. For example, if you buy a phone from AT&T, and you try and sell it, you might want to unlock it so that someone who has T-Mobile is able to purchase it and quickly activate it.
Just about every phone company makes an unlocked model, or you can purchase phones that have become unlocked from their original carrier. Changing phone carriers and trying out different plans is usually simple, but it will be important to know how to change or set the APN on your phone. You might have heard about changing the APN in order to use your carrier’s network, but you probably have no clue how or where to start. Good news, we are here to help!

Verizon APN Settings
Before we get started it is helpful to know that there are multiple versions of the APN out there for Verizon, but we recommend using the 4G LTE version because it is the fastest and most reliable option. Next, the following information is exactly what you should enter into your smartphone to successfully set up the Verizon LTE APN. It is all the same for Androids and iPhones, just be sure to not miss any of the information:
- Name: Verizon
- APN: “internet” or “vzwinternet”
- Proxy: N/A—not required
- Port: N/A—not required
- Username: N/A—not required
- Password: N/A—not required
- Server: N/A—not required
- MMSC: This should show http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
- MMS proxy: N/A—not required
- MMS port: set to 80
- MCC: set to 310
- MNC: set to 012
- Type of Authentication / Authentication type: N/A—not required
- APN type: Leave it as the default. For some Androids, you may use the internet + MMS
How to Set up the Verizon Access Point Settings on Your Phone
Pay very close attention to what each type of phone requires. It will be different for Androids versus iPhones or iPads. Below are easy steps to configure the Verizon wireless access point on your phone:
Android: If you have an android, start off by accessing the “settings” app. You will then select the “wireless connections” option, then “more”> “mobile networks”> “access point names”, and from there you will be able to add in your new APN (refer to the above instructions)
iPhone or iPad: If you own an iOS device, a year or version of the iPhone should work, besides the original iPhone. Go ahead and open up your devices main screen, then select “setup”> “general”> “network”>” “mobile data”. Once you have finished all the steps and successfully set up your Verizon APN settings for Android/ Verizon APN settings for iPhone, you should be able to access the internet and send text messages.

What Is an APN?
APN stands for Access Point Name, which is its given name for the setting on your phone that your phone carrier uses to connect the gateway between the carrier’s network and the internet. In simple terms, your carrier reads the settings to determine the correct IP address, connecting you to the correct secure gateway, and then potentially connecting you to a VPN if needed.
All the hard work is done by your carrier, and all you need to do is make sure all the right settings are in order to get you on the network you need. The process is quite simple, so don’t start feeling overwhelmed. Once the settings are lined up to your carrier’s settings, then your phone will be ready to go.
However, some carriers customize the software on a phone, which means it may block the ability to change the APN even if you got your phone “unlocked”. If this happens, then we recommend calling your phone carrier or going to the store to have them take a look at the phone.
Changing the APN is different for every carrier because every network is structured slightly different, so it’s important that you have Verizon’s exact settings to ensure this works successfully. These settings are specifically for Verizon APN, so if you do not have Verizon as your carrier, then these settings will not be helpful for you.
Before we get started, there are a few important access point name settings that you need to know before changing them:
APN: APN is considered wholesale if you are in the US.
APN Type: The four main APN types are generic, wap, supl, and MMS. The generic option should only be selected if you come across any problems when you set up these options.
MMSC: The letters MMSC, stands for Multimedia Messaging Service, and it is only necessary if you plan on using MMS. This is a requirement for most phones that use MMS such as Androids and iPhones.
Proxy: Mobile carriers use this setting only to set up a proxy between the network and the internet.
An APN is usually auto-configured or auto-detected to each phone, which means you won’t need to make any changes to the APN settings. However, if your phone was unlocked and did not come from your carrier, then you need to learn how to change your APN settings.
